The character Salem Vishnu appeared as a convicted murderer expecting execution by hanging in Malayalam-language blockbuster ''New Delhi'' starring Mammootty was widely appreciated and this made Thiagarajan to direct this Tamil film which showcased the prequel story of his character and why he became a murderer.
